The role of argumentative discourse in the formation of intercultural communicative competence

The changes in the Kazakhstani system of education shift the main focus to the formation of the personality of a modern teacher. In the current realities, a modern foreign language teacher must possess not only basic language knowledge and skills but also up-to-date teaching methods and techniques. Therefore, a modern foreign language teacher shall develop his intercultural communicative competence utilizing all types of dialogical speech. There is a necessity to clarify the concepts of “discourse” and “argumentative discourse” to create a methodology for the formation of argumentation. This article examines the theoretical aspects of discourse research and summarizes the results of studies of argumentation and argumentative discourse as one of the functional varieties of oral discourse. The authors also discuss the method of a Socratic seminar and demonstrate its use in a demo-lesson in the process of the formation of argumentative discourse.
